    :words: on working for Obama

I had quite an election night, too. I've been working for a few weeks for the local Obama campaign, doing some phone banking & canvassing. The campaign in Louisiana was a pretty limited operation, part of the DNC's fifty-state thingy to run everywhere, even in places that probably aren't going to vote for Obama. Like Louisiana!

So, I took the day off from work to spend all day bothering likely Democratic voters. Drove a guy to the polls too, though I was mostly hanging around campaign offices. I wish I'd had a chance to go out canvassing - that'd been pretty depressing before since people here are mostly opposed to Obama, but our Election Day canvassers were only targeting strongly Democratic precincts. Actually, this was true of practically all our efforts in the last month - the late campaign is all about getting out the vote among likely supporters. In Louisiana, this is certainly a clearer divide than in much of the country - while Democrats draw national support from the working class, young voters, liberals and so on, in this state the only demographic that reliably supports Democrats on a national ticket is African Americans. Even seeing the provincial views that predominate in the state and the segregated society (not to mention barely-concealed racism) I was still upset to see that in the end, Obama only got the vote of 14% of white Louisianans!

Anyway, Dad's email describes the whole of Tuesday night. We were wrapping up some of the last-minute phone calls, kind of a hopeless endeavor because nearly everyone had voted by then. A few dozen of us watched as the key mid-Atlantic and midwestern states went for Obama, and not long after that, the anchor called the whole thing for Obama. The crowd exploded, and I really can't do it justice. We were all screaming and embracing and crying, getting drunk on our delirious joy. Also on rum, but mostly joy. It all hit us again a couple hours later, as Obama gave his rather awesome speech in Chicago. I kept grabbing the woman next to me and sort of crying that I couldn't believe it all. One hell of a feeling, and I didn't even feel the need to gloat that much the next day.

We didn't win Louisiana, to no one's surprise, but probably saved our Democratic senator's bacon with all the voters turned out. Frankly, there's a lot not to like about Southern society, but I'm so happy to have been a part of this movement, and wouldn't change a thing.

    Trip report: esophagogastroduodenoscopy
    • Demerol is pretty cool
    • HMOs that force you to go to the hospital and pay $100 for a procedure that could be done at the doctor's office are rather less cool
    • I have a hiatal hernia, tune in next week to see if I can do anything about it

This cartoon says what I've been feeling for so long but just couldn't express, which is that Europe is a hippie riding the bull market into her place in heaven, while America is a haunting image of liberty stuck in the desert, and will soon be pilfered by some guys in trenchcoats. The desert stands for love, as in the Bonnie Tyler song "Total Eclipse of the Heart", while the birds are just (love)birds.

    's no crash
Had a nasty bike accident last night. I'm not sure what flavor of crash it was, but I on a downhill curve and the rear wheel lost traction, making the bike fall out from under me. I got road rash all over, along with some decent cuts on my elbow and hip, and bonked my head a bit. So I slowly made my way out of the Oakland hills, freezing my ass off, until a nice guy with a truck gave me a ride over to the ER. But the people at the hospital were worthless - even though I begged them to work with me, they insisted I had to leave my bike unlocked outside while in the waiting room, and there was no way I could possibly bring it inside. The woman there was "sorry", but admonished me, "You should have thought of that" as I set out to slam into the pavement that evening, I guess. I got really hurt and angry and took off to go home.

I dressed the injuries myself, but today I had to go in to my physician's office, which is actually staffed by people with a shred of decency, who dumped alcohol all over my cuts and gave me a tetanus shot. Better than the alternative, I guess.

    bike bike bike
I finally succeeded at getting a used road bike. I found a good deal on a '99 Specialized Allez that had just been sitting in a garage for five years. It's full aluminum with 105 components, and it's in pretty nice shape. I like to sit on it in my room and make "VROOM VROOM" noises.

I signed up for a free shell account with a German provider, which will allow me to do all kinds of useless stuff, like set up a personal installation of MediaWiki that only I can use. I know there are local outfits that do the same sort of thing for little or no cost, but this is cool because it's a free speech-type project, plus the postcard I sent them will be scanned and displayed online!

Had a nice, busy weekend. Saturday I worked the market in the morning, and left early to drive with my dad down to the family Seder in Palo Alto. The service itself was pretty dumbed-down for the kids, but it's always nice to hang out with that side of the family. Today I got out early for a long bike ride from SF up through the Marin Headlands to Tiburon, and back. Besides all the sunburns, that felt pretty rewarding, though I'm really feeling I'd better get a road bike to replace my old clunker. I've been relaxing since getting back this afternoon -- long rides take a lot out of me, and I've still got to get stronger before the century in May.

All I've been doing lately is programming in Ruby and riding my bike. So I guess if you want to talk about Ruby or my bike, we could.

    Thin Maths
A box of Girl Scout Cookies sells for what, $3.50? That means one of those tubes of Thin Mints that you pop open and just can't stop eating costs $1.75. That means for a mere $52.50/mo, I could be wolfing down 675 calories of sweet, sweet Thin Mint every day.

I joined the YMCA the other day. Today I took my first class, which was an aerobics session with a focus on strength training, or something. The main thing I noticed was I was the only male in a crowd of some thirty middle-aged women, which made me feel kind of creepy. Prancing around on a mat is kind of fun, and good for my flexibility, but I was hoping to spend a little time lifting weights, and they don't offer classes focused on that. Guess I'll have to motivate myself to do that part on my own.
